In 2000, to promote a better understanding of intellectual property, WIPO member states decided that April 26, the date on which the Convention establishing WIPO came into force in 1970, should become World Intellectual Property Day.
Since then, World Intellectual Property Day has provided an annual opportunity to highlight the importance of creativity and innovation worldwide.
It is also an opportunity to highlight the role played by intellectual property rights in promoting these innovations, whether through patents, trademarks, designs or copyright.
This year, the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) is organizing an innovative video competition aimed at young people, to reward inventors and content creators for their ingenuity (Voting | World IP Day 2024 Youth Video Competition (wipo.int)
Young people are the most exposed to screens, the Internet and social networks, making them a prime target for counterfeiters. Raising awareness of Industrial Property among this target group is essential to encourage them to think critically, and above all to inform them of the various means of protection available, adaptable to all types of innovation.
Thanks to these rights, inventors, creators and companies can protect their innovative products and derive economic benefit from them.
At a time when Artificial Intelligence is a topic of debate in every field, it’s important for young people to feel concerned by Intellectual Property, and to get involved right away.
Beyond the personal goal of success, Intellectual Property is closely linked to the objectives of sustainable development, which are at the heart of all our concerns.
To build our common future, we need to rethink the way we live, work and play. World Intellectual Property Day 2024 is an opportunity to examine how intellectual property encourages and can amplify the innovative and creative solutions we need to build our common future.
