The 2024 edition of the Festival Lumière will take place at several venues in the Lyon Metropolis from Saturday 12 to Sunday 20 October 2024.
The Festival Lumière, held every year in the Lyon area, is one of France’s major cinema events. Created in 2009 by the Institut Lumière, the festival celebrates heritage cinema and pays tribute to cinematographic works that have marked the history of the 7th art.
The Festival Lumière is a flagship event for all film lovers, attracting cinephiles from all over the world to (re)discover masterpieces and attend exclusive retrospectives.
This year, as in 2018 and 2019, MARK & LAW is delighted to be associated with this prestigious event as a partner. An event that puts Lyon, an emblematic city of cinema, at the heart of global attention.
Over the course of a week, screenings will be held in a number of Lyon’s most emblematic venues, including the Halle Tony Garnier, the Hangar du Premier-Film (where the Lumière brothers filmed their famous Sortie de l’usine Lumière à Lyon), and numerous cinemas in the city and surrounding region.
The program is rich and varied, offering retrospectives, tributes, previews and restorations of classic films. Audiences can rediscover forgotten or rarely screened masterpieces, as well as documentaries on major cinema figures.
The festival also promotes the transmission of cinema to younger generations, with master classes led by renowned professionals and educational workshops for the very young. It’s a cultural event that’s both fun and instructive, raising awareness of the importance of our cinematic heritage.
The appeal of the Festival Lumière also lies in the warm, friendly atmosphere that prevails throughout the event. Festival-goers can chat with prestigious guests, while enjoying the warm welcome offered by Lyon, a city that occupies a central place in the history of cinema, being the birthplace of the invention of the Cinématographe by the Lumière brothers.
Finally, one of the highlights of the festival is the presentation of the Prix Lumière, awarded to a personality whose career has helped shape the history of cinema. Past winners include such legends as Clint Eastwood (Prix Lumière 2009), Quentin Tarantino (Prix Lumière 2013), Martin Scorsese (Prix Lumière 2015), Catherine Deneuve (Prix Lumière 2016), and more recently Tim Burton (Prix Lumière 2022) and Wim Wenders (Prix Lumière 2023). The award symbolizes the film world’s recognition of creators who have left an indelible mark on the silver screen.
This year, the award goes to Isabelle Huppert, a celebrated French actress of versatility and accomplishment who has collaborated with auteurs from all over the world.
This new edition of the Festival Lumière will be rich in discoveries, emotions and celebrations of the cinema, and will take place, as every year, under the sign of cinematic passion.
